AMA Photographer who is an obsessed woman that gears her company towards teaching Macro and Landscape photographers to push themselves out of their comfort zone.

I specialize in mentoring macro and landscape photographers. What sets my company (Sullivan J Photography) apart is that most mentors or teachers try to get people to find a niche and maximize in that industry but for us it’s about breaking the barriers of conformity and getting outside your comfort zone no matter what area photography you specialize in. We are most proud of being able to interact with artists all over the world with our mentorship, the feedback they give, inspires us every day to continue with our business.

I started Photography in college and became obsessed with the macro aspect of it- I love seeing objects up close and showing them in a way that other people wouldn’t normally perceive. I became a Master Photographer in the Arcanum and that’s where I discovered my passion for teaching, which ultimately led me to create a membership for fellow photographers that are bored with their work and want advance their creativity.

What technology/software/ gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best, as you photograph?
Mar 14, 10:14AM EDT0

The best gear I would say is to invest in a lens that is cut very well and is fast. Photographers usually refer to their lens as "glass" so I would say you want the best cut diamond for your glass.

Software/technology is On1- On1 is like lightroom and photoshop put together- thats my favorite software to post process.

What is your best business tip for established photographers?
Mar 14, 8:46AM EDT0

To always continue your learning, pushing your creativity and building your connections.

Mar 14, 10:48PM EDT0
How many sessions do you do per month? Do you feel you want more work or are you busier than you can handle?
Mar 14, 5:34AM EDT0

I dont take outside jobs anymore because now I focus purely on my membership. The membership is a full time job because I take images, conduct workshops, have live calls and monthly challenges so I just dont have time anymore to take any jobs. I would say when I didnt have the membership, depending on what the work was, I would either have a couple a month or if it was a lot I would focus just on one.

How do you get paid to do what you want to do with your photography?
Mar 13, 12:00PM EDT0

I license my images out to companies so I get paid via contract with them so thats ideally how you could get paid for doing what you want. Another way would be working directly for a magazine or website where they comission you to go out and take images for them.

What is your best photography tip?
Mar 13, 9:31AM EDT0

My best photography tip is for you to know what your main subject is and anything other than that subject should either be part of the "story" or out of the image. When refer to "story" I mean that every photograph should have a main subject AND story and everything else in the photo should be telling the story of that subject.

What is the most used photo editing App or tool on your phone and what kind of editing do you generally do on your landscape photos?
Mar 12, 5:25PM EDT0

Snapseed is my go-to app on my phone! Its super easy to use and you can pin-point areas to fix.

My Landscape images are not from my phone and those are HDR, where you merge multiple images into one to get the correct exposure.

What is the bravest thing you have ever done when it comes to photography?
Mar 12, 4:28PM EDT0

The bravest thing I've ever done was creatiing my membership because it new territory and completely out of my comfort zone and I had to invest my own money into it not knowing what the outcome would be.  It's one of those things that makes you really question yourself and if you and your skills are where they need to be in order to teach other people.

Which country do you believe boasts the most diverse photo opportunities?
Mar 12, 3:18PM EDT0

For landscape I would say New Zealnd because it is one of the most beautifully untouched places in the world. Macro would be everywhere :)

Mar 12, 3:36PM EDT1
What does landscape photography mean to you and why is it not considered to be one of the more glamorous forms of photography?
Mar 12, 12:05PM EDT0

Landscape photography means the world to me. We live on such a beautiful planet that is not respected by everyone and I truly believe that sharing these images will show the beauty of  Mother Nature and that we cherish of it. Everyone percieves photography differently, to someone who prefers images of celebrities and sports teams then landscape photography wouldnt be "glamorous" to them, but to someone who loves nature and see all the different aspects nature has to offer, landscape photography would be glamrous to them.

Do you use any artificial light for your photographs and why?
Mar 12, 9:10AM EDT0

Yes I do- I was taught as a studio photographer so I use a variety of tools like grids to hone in light- I love to use gels and I use this to either enhance the color or create a photograph that is different that everyone else.

What are some good resources for a novice photographer?
Mar 11, 11:08PM EDT0

I would say photography classes, Youtube and Memberships would be best for anyone trying to learn or better their photography skills. Also this website here has a lot of good basic photography building skills.

What made you choose macro photography in particular?
Mar 11, 5:25PM EDT0

Since I was a little girl I always loved science and I would use my microscope to see things up close and then when I took a photography class in college I realized there are macro lenses that can get get up close so I merged my two passions together and focused on Macro Photography. You should always photograph what you love.
